Today I was on the phone with a speaking client about an upcoming program. We got to talk about the importance of acknowledging people who really made such a difference during the early stages of the Pandemic. And of course, delivery people came to mind. She shared the most beautiful story of living up on a hill in a development that’s quite a hike for the delivery people to get to. So, for the most part, the residents wanting to show their appreciation to the hardworking delivery folks, put coolers outside their front door packed with cold drinks, water, goodies, and the more than occasional Snickers bar.

A simple white note scotched taped to the cooler said, “Please help yourself, and thank you!” Even as I write this story of a simple act of kindness, tears come to my eyes. Acts of kindness, big and small, break my heart open. They restore my faith in humanity, and remind me that with all the insanity, and discord in the world, “a little kindness goes a long way.”

My client went on to say that rather than just grabbing a soda or a candy bar, many delivery people would ring the doorbell to hand the person the package directly, but mostly to say thank you. They were deeply grateful that their service was being appreciated. It takes so little to impact another person so much.

As a NYC Stress management Speaker and Corporate Coach Trainer, I’m often asked to provide tools, stories, exercises, and messaging to enhance connection, engagement, and community. Teams are hungry for all of it. I work hard and do my best to do that and will continue to do so.

More and more employees are looking to find a culture that speaks to them. Where they feel they can grow and are appreciated. So many resources are being used to further different companies’ brands, all of which are vital. However, often the simplest solutions are right in front of us. Sometimes we simply need to take a breath, just notice who’s in front of us, and what might they need, and ask ourselves, “What small act of kindness can make a big difference?” I can assure you the ideas will come pouring in.

“Common Sense; Uncommonly Practiced” is one of my LOIS-isms (Lessons, Opportunities, Insights, and Solutions)

I truly believe kindness is one of the key elements of being a great leader, co-worker, and all-around person.

“When in your life has a little kindness gone a long way and as a leader how do you use kindness in your work or with your team?” I’d love to know.
